Becoming a Member

General

To be eligible to apply to become a general member of the Canadian Association of Insolvency and Restructuring Professionals, you must:

1) have been an articling member and completed the NIQP Course of Study, or

2) hold a trustee licence issued by the Superintendent of Bankruptcy.

The National Insolvency Qualification Program (NIQP) was established by a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between CAIRP and the Superintendent of Bankruptcy. The original MOU, was concluded by the two organizations on September 11, 1997 and renewed in 2004 and established the National Insolvency Qualification Program (NIQP) as a jointly sponsored qualification program for individuals seeking to become licensed as a Trustee in Bankruptcy.

Under a new MOU signed October 8, 2009 the Superintendent will revert to his exclusive role of regulator, while continuing to assure himself that the education program – to be renamed the CIRP Qualification Program (CQP) - produces candidates qualified to sit the oral board examination for a Trustee in Bankruptcy licence.

Under the prior MOU, the admission requirement for general membership in the Association was to sit the oral board examination and receive a licence as a Trustee in Bankruptcy, before being eligible to apply to CAIRP for general membership.

Admission to general membership within the Association is no longer limited to having completed the Oral Boards. Once you have successfully completed the National Insolvency Examination you can apply for general membership and will have the option to use the CIRP certification.
